If it is Broke…Fix It

One of my favorite sayings is “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. That is a good saying and has a lot of truth to it. Good sayings can give you something to hang onto in life.

So perhaps you would enjoy a saying I have around my house, “if it is broke, get someone else to fix it’. There is a lot of truth in that one as well, let me explain. Fixing things is not something I am very good at. I never put the H in handy that is for sure. For example one day my father in law asked one of my kids to go and get a screwdriver for him and so my little one ran off and came back with the one thing he knew of as a screwdriver in my house, the butter knife. Perhaps that should give you some indication as to how good I am at fixing things.

So if something is broke I may take a look at it but more than likely if it is going to get fixed someone else is going to do the fixing. This is what I have learned about this fixing things part of life. If I try to do it myself many times I make the problem worse by not knowing what I am doing. Another something I have learned is that not matter what is broke I do not have the tool to fix it even if I could. Then one last thought on what I have learned is that the time I spend working on the issue is at least double what it would be for a professional. Thus my saying comes into play; if it is broke get someone to fix it.

What is true for my house is also true for life in general. When life is broke we foolishly try to fix it ourselves. This is what I want to make perfectly clear; you do not have the tools to fix it, normally you make the problem worse and it always takes a lot longer when you attempt to fix your life as opposed to letting the pro fix it.

Just in case your wondering the mister fix it in life is God. Think about it for a second if you will. He created you thus he knows the product. Ask any handy man and he will tell you knowledge of the product is a huge advantage in fixing something. God knows you, He is well aware of what is broke.

He has the tools to fix the problem if you will turn them over to Him. His Holy Spirit will give your guidance to follow. He will give you peace to hang on while the problem is under repair and not only that but once the job is done there is a good chance you will be a better person than the one that was broke in the first place. That is how He works, using our breakdowns and failures to mature us in our faith and to help us avoid future need of repair.

Let me warn you ‘life mister fix it’s’, the more you try on your own the longer it is going to take. The deeper the pit and the more miserable you will be. Don’t wait another minute, call on God, hey He already knows something is wrong. The longer you wait the more difficult the problem becomes and the more likely there will be more things to fix. He is on call twenty four hours a day, find yourself on your knees and call on God.

Now there is the trust issue isn’t there. I just do not trust anyone to work on my cars or appliances around the house. I have a few trusted friends who know what they are doing; I don’t just call any oh Joe off the street. Let me assure you God can be trusted; he loves you more than anyone. He knows you and your problems; he forgives you of your sin. He desires that your life be lived to its fullest and He will get the job done without delay.

One last thing to consider is this, if it is broke, do something about it. You don’t keep a broken appliance in the house you either fix it or get a new one. Too many folks walk around with addictions, broken marriages, busted relationships and broken down spiritual lives. Why? Get it fixed!

Friends remember this; if your life is broke, get someone else to fix it: GOD!

Scriptures 34:17-19, “Is anyone crying for help? God is listening, ready to rescue you. If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if your kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath. Disciples so often get into trouble; still, God is there every time.” The Message

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to not get into the habit of fixing ourselves. Help us to trust you, to listen to you and to take the actions you lay upon our heart. Have us not to mearly cry for help but have us to listen with open ears and a ready to take action heart. In Christ name, Amen.
