Growing Weeds

Its not that I don’t like grass it is just that it keeps getting run over by kids playing. Last year I received a couple bags of seeds for grass and I thought why not just chunk it out there and see what happens. I was not expecting miracles but you never know.
Well sure enough just as the winter rain hit grass began to grow. I was very excited. So excited that I had the kids stay off of it long enough for it to take root, it all looked very good at first. But now I have noticed there was a flaw with my bag of seeds, it had weeds.
The good looking grass is gone and it has been replaced by weeds. You see mixed in with all the good seed was plenty of bad. Now it is spread all over my back yard, the good with the bad. Just so you know there is a lot more bad showing up than good. The weeds seem to have chocked out the good grass.
There stands our life sometimes doesn’t it. We do our best to plant good seeds. We take care of ourselves, we go to church, we read the Bible, we pray and we serve God. That is the good stuff.
But it only takes a moment, really just one bad seed and here come the weeds of life. We slack up on our dedication to the Lords work. We start to compromise on what we stand for, soon wondering what we really do believe. We start to take the good looking well groomed life we had worked so hard to attain for granted.
One weed turns into another; we think oh well we can get that out of our life easy enough. Then suddenly we look up and instead of the live we had desired we end up with one where the bad things have overtaken the good. We are surprised though we shouldn’t be; we all know how weeds get into our life. It just happens so fast, we never see it coming, until most of the time it is too late. So what I might ask should we do?
I would say don’t do what I do with real weeds. I like to just mow em down, hey the grass still looks green and no one notices until after a few days when the weeds begin to grow back. That is the easy way out, but all it does it hide the problem.
The right thing to do with weeds is to get down on your knees and pull them out from the roots one at a time until they are completely gone. That is exactly what we need to do with the ugly things we have let grow in our life, those things that displease God, pull them out by the roots.
Don’t gloss over it, don’t argue with them, don’t rationalize if it’s bad or not. If God lays it on your heart it is a weed, get rid of it. If it is against what God says in the Bible then don’t mow over it, root it out before it takes over your life! Don’t leave any part of the weed in your life either, start at the bottom where the root grows and get it out. Because let me assure you if you don’t get to the bottom of the problem it will come back and it will bring new weeds with it.
So you want to get rid of some weeds in the yard, get on your knees and get to work. How about the weeds in your life? Same thing, get on your knees and let God get to work. Before you know God will have cultivated a beautiful life again, just the way He had always planned for it to be.
Scripture: Romans 8:5-6, “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;”
Prayer: Father help us to seek you way and your will. Help us to be mindful when we start to let the little sinful things come into our life, those things that lead to greater sin. Help us to root out of our lives all the evil that separates us from knowing you fully. May that be the desires of our heart this day, to know you and love you more. In Christ Name, Amen.
